Once upon a time, there was a very fast hare and a very slow tortoise.
むかしむかし、足のとても速いうさぎと、とてもゆっくり歩くかめがいました。
The hare laughed at the tortoise for being so slow. "Let's have a race!" said the tortoise.
うさぎはかめが遅いのを笑いました。「かけっこをしよう！」とかめが言いました。
The race started. The hare ran very fast and soon he was far ahead.
かけっこが始まりました。うさぎはとても速く走り、すぐにかめを大きく引き離しました。
The hare looked back and saw no tortoise. "I have time for a nap," he thought.
うさぎが後ろを振り返ると、かめは見えませんでした。「昼寝をする時間があるぞ」とうさぎは思いました。
While the hare was sleeping, the tortoise kept walking slowly but steadily.
うさぎが眠っている間も、かめはゆっくり、でも着実に歩き続けました。
When the hare woke up, the tortoise was already at the finish line!
うさぎが目を覚ましたとき、かめはもうゴールにいました！

ゆっくり着実に進むものが、最後には勝つのです。かめが優勝しました！
